Just finished this. Mixed feelings. Probably would be good to explain to an adolescent why friggin narcotics are a horrific plan. Before they become jaded and begin to question the validity of the book.

Parts of this book that blew my mind:

Pushing drugs to 9 year olds

Pulling her hair out

Discussing her own rape in a passing sentence like it was nothing but being able to empathize with her friend at the institution

Her younger brother being so normal

Her family on the whole being so forgiving, mine would probably not speak to me for a month after pulling half the stunts she pulled

It did make me think about the generational differences though. She says that her parents wouldn’t notice a few missing pills but have their bottles marked and know when even a sip of their liquor is gone. Compare that to today, I feel that the parents of my generation are much more hyper aware of drug use among their children and it is considerably easier for kids to get alcohol because its seen as the lesser of two evils. I imagine this is cyclical.

So I know especially at this time this is going to sound so generic. But it’s the truth, so suck it. Mockingjay was the saddest book I have ever read. And I’m sure it is because it ends a difficult series with no sort of resolve presented but it truly made me ball for about 3 hours. My roommate also had the same response. I’ve never been so moved by anything in my life and this book tore me apart. The only thing that comes close is The Things They Carried and I’m pretty sure that’s just because one of my best friends is being sent to Afghanistan and I worry about him.
